Go Viral or Go Home
Viral – let’s not pretend, it’s a horrible and unpleasant word, but, in the marketing world this one word is gold! It signifies a marketing boom, overwhelming exposure which could see you catapulted from an unknown business into a worldwide phenomenon – but how exactly do you go about becoming viral?
Step One: Be Weird, Wonderful & Completely Unique
To go viral you have to get your backside (am I allowed to say that?) off the fence and start voicing your opinions and getting slightly wacky with your marketing campaigns – the weirder the better. A personal favourite of mine is the #danceponydance: it’s fantastic, it’s quirky, it’s weird and totally unrelated to mobile phones but does it work – hell yes it works!
It’s connected with consumers on a whole different level and made the brand Three fun, inviting and more importantly – well known. This kind of exposure is fantastic, and it’s taken the social media world by storm, dominating YouTube like no one else has.
Step Two: Free Giveaways & Competitions
The next step is to give your audience an incentive to share, like and promote your business, and the best way to do this is to offer them a prize. The bigger the prize, the more people will share, Tweet, Like and +1 your campaign.
Aside from the obvious prize giveaway, you can also run promotion codes and discounts; normally however the big prize acts as more of an incentive. Remember – you have to speculate to accumulate.
Step Three: Make it Easy to Share
If you’re running a competition or a campaign you need to promote it, and once you have done this you need to make sure that your campaign is easy to share. Whether you promote it via billboards, leaflets, TV adverts or radio adverts, you need to create a new landing page which is pimped out with easy-to-use share icons so that everyone on the social media sites can +1, Like or Tweet your campaign and spread it, like the contagious marketing campaign you want it to become.
These are just three elements of a successful viral campaign – but if you incorporate them into your campaign you are sure to succeed. Good luck and let me know how you get on!
