Mobile Click-to-Call Tracking In GA – Video
Hi and welcome to this weeks SEO video blog, today we are going to take a look at how to track your Click-to-call events in Google Analytics.
The benefit of touch screen technology on mobile devices means that digital marketers around the world are able to provide additional data regarding an users behaviour on a website, in this case how many times someone has clicked to make a call from your mobile website.
So in 2 simple steps we’ll have you up and running tracking the no. of clicks your real text phone numbers on your site are getting. Before you start in is vital you are running the latest GA code, if your not sure log into GA and head to Admin >> Tracking info and cross reference the code displayed against your site.
Step 1. Set up the tel tag:
To do this you need to add 2 pieces of code to your real text phone no., Firstly the <a href=”tel:″ ></a> tag needs to be added around your phone number as displayed.
<a href=”tel:0800 01 999 06″>0800 01 999 06</a>
This should mean that your phone number is now clickable.
Step 2. Set up the Event:
Secondly we need inform GA of the tracking event and add the following code: onclick=”_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','Click-to-Call','Header','0800 01 999 06']);”
This code is telling GA to initiate the onclick and track the event, referencing the name, in this case ‘Click-to-call’, followed by the location of the no. on your site ‘Header’ and the number its self.
So your final piece of code should look something like this:
<a href=”tel:08000199906″ onclick=”_gaq.push(['_trackEvent','Click-to-Call','Header','08000199906']);”>08000199906</a>
These events can now be found under Content > Events > Overview or Top Events.
Once you have some data your Google Analytics should look something like this:
Thats it, nice and simple. You can take this further with custom reports and add geographical location, operating system or any other metric you wish to track within GA.
